Got to go to a Concord event and Windham event; both had about 300 people in attendance. The Gov. was very pumped up at Concord.
Alan was driving Melanie and me back from Widham when the truck in front of us started swerving half way into the adjacent lane and back. Melanie and I, recalling our drivers ed days, both told Alan to slow down, which he did. Soon, though we were getting a little closer to it as we had switched lanes to the left to exit. The truck started then to go from the right to the left across three lanes. At first I thought they might have forgotten that they need to get off at the left exit, but it soon became apparent that the driver was not in control of the vehicle as it slammed into the left guard rail and rebounded into our lane. A dog suddenly appeared outside the truck.
Thankfully, we had plenty of time to stop. We pulled over into the left shoulder, and soon realized that although there were three campaigners in the car, not a one of us had a cell phone. At this point I was in favor of leaving since we couldn’t be of service: no one looked hurt and if they were, we aren’t doctors. Plus more cars had pulled over to help.
Alan insisted we stay. So we did. Melanie called 911 on another passer-by’s cell. No cellular 911 yet–they didn’t even know what state we were in. No one was hurt, but Melanie told them about the accident so the police would come. The police came 10 minutes later and we wrote and signed a written account of the accident.
In sum: Alan was right, I was wrong. Definitely a good idea to stay on many levels. 1) We added some information to the collective pool about cell phones, 911, and the police. 2) We were witnesses and the police needed that info. 3) The woman driver of the truck was on something much more powerful than alcohol and shouldn’t have been left alone.
