Friday night I attended reconstructionist services in Arlington. Had a bit of trouble finding the door in, but once inside the service was great. The members were impressed by (1) my homemade apple crisp and (2) that I found the congregation through the Internet as opposed to word-of-mouth. But, alas, again, no young people. So, enough of the Internet, I’m going to leverage my social network. I’ve asked a few people who know young Jews in the area and hopefully I’ll find out where all the young’ns go for services. If you happen to have info on this query let me know.
After services, I raced across Arlington to meet up with the WWNight crew for the debut of Harry Potter. Got there just in time and really enjoyed the movie. The time travel plot was extremely well done–the best I’ve seen on the big screen in ages. Interestingly, those that had read the book had more complaints about the movie than the rest of us (reminded me a bit of The Two Towers in that respect). Maybe I should continue my trend of watching the movie and then reading the book: seems to make the whole experience more enjoyable.
Saturday I waited in line at the DMV only to find out that I had to pay VA sales tax on a car I bought in NH! I won’t go into the gory details, but I couldn’t get out of it, and I don’t think a letter to the Better Business Bureau will help this time. Then did some unpacking and furniture building before going out to dinner and another movie (Shrek 2) with newfound friends in Georgetown.
I also watched the Belmont Stakes with said friends: as Smarty is coming down the stretch and Birdstone is starting to make his move I declare “There’s no way that horse is going to catch him.” Of course about ten seconds later he does. Hi foot, meet mouth. I should probably limit my prognostication to soccer and baseball.
Sunday was uneventful with more unpacking and more working.
