Winter Wonderland

So, after getting 8 inches this weekend, the staff played some snow football this morning and then Hillary and I went sledding this evening. In football, Julie made this sweet take-out-the-legs tackle on me: I was quite impressed. Sledding-wise, we found a decent hill and made fools of ourselves when this woman walked by and we were doing the Dean clap. I shouted from the top of the hill for her to vote for Howard–she said she would. I think I believe her.
By the way, the Prius does very well in the snow (go traction control!). Especially when I remember to take the parking brake off :)

Bottled Lightning

Ever wonder what I do up here?
Adam Nagourney tells you in this New York Times piece. Note the paragraph on the database.
And, as a shout out to our State Director, The Note says:

And the New York Times’ Adam Nagourney lets Karl Rove in on a little secret–Karen Hicks has captured lightning in a bottle in New Hampshire for Dr. Dean.

*** Snow! ***

So now that I have a car, I can visit all my non-Manchester friends (who of course work for Dean as well–don’t for a second think that we have lives outside of Ho Dean). Last night I took the datamobile up to Concord. Got some dinner and then headed to “Camp Dean,” a cabin in the middle of nowhere that houses three staffers. I was tasked with the job of building the fire. Turned out that I was a little too parsimonious in my fire-feeding; Jake and Aaron dismissed me from my duties in order to load every piece of kindling they could procure into the furnace. I guess they didn’t like the house at 58 degrees…(though to my credit, they only managed to warm us to 62).
This morning I woke up to my first NH snow. The Prius did fairly well in the poor conditions: I certainly didn’t experience any of the spin-outs that some of my coworkers did. And it’s a good thing I didn’t spend the night at Camp Dean: traffic was so bad that the 20-minute commute from Concord to Manchester was tripled time-wise today.
Plus we got to have a snowball fight! :-)

Slash-doting

LOTD: Not exactly how I’d propose, but cute nonetheless.

This one might stick

From the Concord Monitor:

“Someone’s got to take the graveyard shift, and today it’s us,” said Lex Paulson, the Dean college outreach coordinator. Paulson, 23, manned the Dean office during the afternoon. Dean computer guru Aaron “Data” Strauss checked in for the morning.

In other news, after getting pulled over for “driving while young” on Monday, my brother and I were stopped for “walking while young” on Thanksgiving night. We were chatting along a road after the elder folk had retired for the evening. The Maine cop was much nicer than the NH duo. I’ve just been a law enforcement magnet recently.

Going by the Book

Sunday night the Tech Team and other geeks traveled to Concord to watch the extended edition DVD of The Two Towers (I highly recommend watching it). I drove to show off my new Prius and on the way back, just as we were getting on I-89, we are pulled over by the cops. I knew that I hadn’t run the red light to get on the freeway since I was so busy fiddling with the Prius’ touchscreen (!) that Erin had to inform me that the light was green. So…maybe they just wanted to check out the car of the year?
Turns out we looked a bit young to be driving such a nice car :). And since there had been reports of “yutes” messing around with cars and maybe stealing some on the road we JUST had been on, they pulled us over. After checking out four driver’s licenses from four different states (with none being New Hampshire), the cops let us go. Though, I did get a chance to show off the Prius to the friendly police officers.
All of this begs the question: were the real “bad guys” getting away while the cops were taking 15 minutes to clear us? After making a snap judgment about us on the road that we might be criminals, is it that much worse to make a more informed judgment that we’re not criminals after the cops pull us over? I’m sure they we’re going by the book; but does the book make us safer?
Food for thought while you’re filling your stomachs this Thanksgiving.

Six Pack

Eid Mubarak!
Why is it that whenever I do something really nice for someone they say “I owe you a six pack?” Do they think I need to get drunk? Because, well, I don’t. They should offer me something useful–like a tank of gas. Oh wait, I don’t need that either ;)

Date: Bad Conversion

Find a linux/unix/etc prompt (though some only work on MIT’s athena) and type in these commands:
got a light?
cat “food in cans”
If I had a ( for every $ Bush spent on Iraq, what would I have?
look into “my eyes”
date me
test my argument
sleep with me
%blow
Once you’re done with those:
echo ‘[q]sa[ln0=aln256%Pln256/snlbx]sb3135071790101768542287578439snlbxq’|dc
